Talkin’ with The Rhino

So about a week before going to the kidney doc, I had starting listening to more of Stan Efferding’s “Rhino Rants” on Youtube. Stan is just an interesting guy to listen to and he is knowledgeable on so many subjects. The “rants” aren’t too long so I can focus on them. One of his rants, was on sodium intake and his approach to it with not only himself but Flex Wheeler and many other athletes he deals with. You can find it on youtube just search “Rhino Rants #10: Creatine Sucks but this Works” (or just go to the bottom of the page where I have embeded the video). Before listening to this episode, I would have said that I got plenty of salt in my diet. But Stan’s approach is about taking a lot more daily and especially with higher volume athletes. Since this not a normally accepted outlook, I started investigating the whys and also if it makes sense. I also implemented some of the protocols to test them out. I began adding salt in right away, the full amount for the day of 10 grams all in one big dose. So wham, I gulped 10g down with some flavored bcaa powder. I learned quickly, that much salt makes you head to the bathroom. It is quite a laxative. Like most things, there is an adjustment phase to everything. Day two, 10g down the hatch and right to the pooper. Still quite a laxative. Day three, yep, a Dear John letter to write, well not literally. Day 4, the adaption I hoped for was not there, so I changed the dose to twice a day at 5 g. This is not how Stan recommends it by the way.

In the meantime, I found out from my Irish Kidney punching doc that my love handles ain’t protecting my insides like they promised they would. After getting a “you are perfectly healthy except for the 44% kidney function” lecture, I staredt rethinking my whole salty new lifestyle and hazingly remember all the bad things about salt and its mythical badness. The wife says “why don’t you ask Stan”. I know him, sort of, we have talked a couple times but I didn’t have him on speed dial. I do have Mark Bell’s number who is good friends with him and he kindly gave me Stan’s info. Cool. I text Stan and ask if its cool if I ask him a few questions about salt intake. He is really cool about it and sends me a couple of huge texts back. I know he answers these questions all the time so taking the time to be as detailed as he is a VERY generous thing and I appreciated it so much. I asked a bunch of standard questions. He sends me a couple of Ray Peat videos along with answers to my questions that contradict some many I thought I knew.

Sliding doors open and close all the time and this one opened a huge door. The Ray Peat videos alone are worth it. Like him or not, believe or not, he just has a fascinating amount of information. You figure out what you want out of it. The domino affect from this continues to cascade in many directions as Ray talks about so many subjects and genres that make me want to look them all up. This is my ADD/ADHD dream come true.

Back to Stan. We have implemented several of his protocols. All of them can be used in a athletic or general health capacity. My plan is to go a month and get my blood work tested. That is also what he does with Flex on a monthly basis. From simply the salt standpoint I am fuller and still the same BF. BP is not up. So far so good. The other protocols are only a week in so can’t say yay or nay except I am consuming alot more carrots, OJ and milk. I will let you know how it goeskis but I have way more questions to ask
