Last few weeks of lifting. Not a lot going on during the week, but a few Saturday's in there...
Wednesday I did Squats with a new safety Squat Strap I had been working on. It is a simple attachment that goes on a straight bar to allow you to simulate a safety squat Bar without the cost of buying a safety squat bar. It hammers the mid back just like a safety squat bar does.
Worked with the strap with the straight bar at 135 X 3 sets of 8, 185 X 2 sets of 5, 225 X 2 sets of 5, 275 X 1, 315 X 2 sets of 1. This was the first version of this new strap. It worked O.K., but torques the elbows up a good bit, so needed to make some adjustments.
Saturday I squatted with the straight bar using the improved safety Squat Strap. The plan was to test it out with more weight. I changed the strap/handles to have adjustable loops instead of straps to hang on. Now you can put your arms through the loops and the weight is resting on the forearms at a better angel for zero elbow pain.
135 X 3 sets of 8, 225 X 2 sets of 5, 275 X 3, 315 X 3 with squat buddy, 365 X 1 with squat buddy, 405 X 1 with squat buddy. I was very pleased with how the strap held the bar in place on my back. It still needed some adjusting to get it more user friendly, but not a hard adjustment.
Belt squats on pit shark: sets of 5 reps at 3 plates, 6 plates and 3 reps at 8 plates. These were short and to the point mainly to test out a new belt squat belt I have been working on. The belt performed well with no issues for anyone that has used it so far. Good signs for a new belt squat belt to come out soon…
Happy I trained a tiny bit on Wednesday. Deads from the floor. 225 X 3 sets of 5, 315 X 3 sets of 2, 365 X 2, 415 X 1. This one felt heavier than I had hopped, but what can I expect. I have not pulled a quite a while. Went down to 365 Sumo in squat buddy for 2 reps and sumo didn’t feel to bad. I am going to have to step up my deadlift game in the next few weeks. My wife and I go in for our 20 week scan to find out the gender of our baby. We should be having a gender reveal late that week and it involves some smoke bombs and me deadlifting. I figured I have to have at least 4 plates on the bar to save my street cred (if I ever had any). Haha.
Saturday 5/4 Squats
Tested out what I believe is the final version of the safety Squat Strap. I kept the loops that I added and put some Velcro on the strap to hold it in place on the bar so it is easier to line up straight. That is important on any squat, but even more so with a squat that you don’t have your hands out wide to help balance the bar.
135 X 3 sets of 8, 185 X 2 sets of 5, 225 X 3, 275 X 2, 315 X 1 with squat buddy, 365 X 2 singles with squat buddy. I was playing with the length of the loops I put my elbows in to see what was harder or easier with my arms tucked up closer to my body (easier) and further away (harder).
That was all she wrote for training. My wife and I had friends come in from Maryland so we spent most of the weekend running around town to different places to eat and a few new breweries. Got to visit Steel hands and Swamp Cabbage for the first time. Steel hands is a lot bigger than I realized. It was an impressive operation that was packed even though it was storming. Definitely will be heading back there.
